Zycus is hiring Software Engineers from the 2027 graduating batch for a Java and Spring Boot backend role, hybrid across Mumbai, Bengaluru and Pune. It is a genuinely interesting posting: Zycus builds Source-to-Pay procurement software around an agentic AI engine called Merlin AI, and the job description is built around engineers who already use AI tools in their own work. But two things need saying before you invest time in it.
The academic bar is among the hardest we have seen this year. It is not 80% in your degree — it is minimum 80% (or equivalent CGPA) in 10th, 12th and BE/B.Tech, plus no active backlogs and no history of backlogs or arrears at all. One cleared backlog in a second-semester subject ends it. If any of those four conditions fails, this posting is not a near-miss you can argue your way past; it is a filter applied before anyone reads your projects.

The Eligibility Bar, Spelled Out
Most postings state one marks threshold. This one states four separate conditions, and all must hold:
- 80% or equivalent CGPA in 10th.
- 80% or equivalent CGPA in 12th.
- 80% or equivalent CGPA in BE/B.Tech.
- No active backlogs and no history of backlogs or arrears: the wording covers cleared ones too, not just pending.
That last clause is the one to read twice. “No history of backlogs/arrears” is stricter than the usual “no active backlogs”, and it removes a lot of otherwise strong candidates. It is also verifiable from your transcripts, so there is no point applying and hoping it will not come up.
If you are unsure whether your CGPA converts to 80% under your university’s formula, check it before applying rather than after. Our note on converting CGPA to percentage covers the different methods universities use, and at a bar this high the conversion method genuinely changes the answer for borderline candidates.
The rest of the eligibility list is more conventional:
- Degree: BE/B.Tech in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics, AI/ML, Data Science or related branches.
- Batch: Graduating in 2027, so current students, not those who have already finished.
- Fundamentals: Strong understanding of Data Structures & Algorithms, OOP, DBMS, Operating Systems and Computer Networks.
- Programming: Good programming skills, with Java preferred.
- Communication: Stated as “excellent”, and listed in eligibility rather than as a nice-to-have.
What Makes This Posting Unusual: AI Tools Are in the Requirements
The most interesting thing here is not the Java stack. It is that using AI coding tools has moved from something you might mention to something the posting requires. Zycus names ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Gemini explicitly, lists “AI-Augmented Engineering” as the first responsibility block ahead of backend engineering, and puts “demonstrated interest in AI-assisted software development through projects, hackathons, internships, coding competitions, or open-source contributions” in the eligibility criteria, not the bonus section.
Two years ago, a fresher admitting they used ChatGPT to write code would have worried about how it looked. Here it is the point. The responsibilities go further: “learn and apply prompt engineering techniques to improve development productivity” is written as a job duty.
What this means practically: vague enthusiasm will not clear this bar, because the requirement says demonstrated. You need something you can point at: a project built with an LLM API, a GitHub repository where your commit history shows AI-assisted work, a hackathon entry, a blog post about a workflow you developed. If you have been using these tools daily and never documented it, spend a weekend turning one of those workflows into a small public project. That is a far better use of your time than another LeetCode streak, and our look at fresher hiring trends in 2026 covers why more employers are screening for this.
Being honest about the other side: “AI-augmented” engineering at an entry level can mean genuine leverage, or it can mean being handed the tickets that an AI tool nearly finishes. The posting’s backend section (REST APIs, microservices, code reviews, clean testable code) suggests real engineering underneath, which is the reassuring part. Ask in the interview what a first-year engineer’s work actually looks like week to week.
What You Will Actually Build
- Backend applications in Java and Spring Boot.
- REST APIs and microservices, under the guidance of senior engineers.
- Work with databases, data models and application integrations.
- Clean, maintainable, testable code, with participation in code reviews and engineering discussions.
- APIs and services that interact with AI systems, plus exposure to how agent-based systems are designed.
This is a conventional enterprise backend role with an AI layer on top, which for a fresher is a good combination: you learn transferable Java and distributed-systems skills while getting exposure to agentic AI patterns that are genuinely current. If your Java or backend fundamentals need work before the interview, our Java roadmap for absolute beginners and backend developer roadmap cover the ground between coursework and what this stack expects.
Preferred and Bonus Skills
| Preferred | Bonus points |
|---|---|
| Basic Spring Boot or another backend framework | Projects built with LLMs, Agentic AI frameworks or GenAI APIs |
| REST APIs and web technologies | Coding competitions, hackathons, technical challenges |
| SQL and relational databases | Web, mobile or full-stack applications |
| Git and version control | GitHub contributions or open-source involvement |
| Cloud platforms, Docker, Kubernetes, AI dev tools | Technical blogs, research papers, public technical content |
Note how much of both columns is about public evidence rather than private knowledge: GitHub contributions, hackathon entries, blogs, open-source work. For a 2027-batch student, that is actionable: you have time to build a visible trail before applications peak. Git is listed under preferred skills and GitHub contributions under bonus points, so if version control is the gap, our Git and GitHub roadmap is the fastest fix. It is a weekend of work, not a semester.
On hackathons specifically, they appear twice in this posting. If you have not done one, DevDash ’26 at IIT Dhanbad is currently open with registrations until 7 October 2026.
Who Should Apply?
- 2027-batch BE/B.Tech students who clear 80% at all three levels with a completely clean backlog record.
- Candidates who already use AI coding tools seriously and have something public to show for it.
- Students comfortable in Java who want enterprise backend work rather than a services-company role.
- Anyone genuinely interested in agentic AI and enterprise automation. This is a product company building in that space, not adding AI as a label.
- PICT students, for whom this is most likely the intended campus drive.
- Candidates able to work hybrid from Mumbai, Bengaluru or Pune.
Who Is This Role Not For?
- Anyone with a backlog history, however old or minor. The wording excludes cleared arrears, not just pending ones.
- Candidates below 80% at any of 10th, 12th or degree level.
- Any batch other than 2027.
- Candidates with no demonstrable AI-tool work: the requirement says “demonstrated”, and it sits in eligibility.
- Those wanting frontend, data science or ML engineering roles. This is backend engineering that interacts with AI systems, not model building.
- Anyone who needs the CTC confirmed before applying, since none is published.
Salary
Zycus has not disclosed a CTC in this posting. For a 2027-batch campus-style role at a product company, the figure normally arrives with the offer rather than being negotiated. Our in-hand salary calculator converts a CTC into realistic monthly take-home after PF and tax once you have a number, which is the figure worth comparing across offers. For broader context on how product-company packages compare with volume recruiters, our roundup of the top 10 off-campus hiring companies for freshers in 2026 is a useful benchmark.
Selection Process
The posting does not describe the rounds. Based on what it asks for, prepare on four fronts:
- DSA and CS fundamentals. Data Structures & Algorithms, OOP, DBMS, Operating Systems and Computer Networks are all named explicitly in eligibility. That list usually means an online assessment.
- Java, properly. Collections, OOP in practice, exception handling, and a Spring Boot project you built and can explain end to end.
- SQL and data modelling. Joins, aggregation, and reasoning about a schema.
- An AI-workflow story. Expect to be asked how you use these tools. The strong answer is specific: what you asked, what it produced, where it was wrong, and how you caught it. The weak answer is “it makes me faster.”
Because the AI layer sits alongside real backend work, it is worth being fluent in the concepts as well as the tools. Our overview of the skills required for AI/ML jobs for freshers covers what “agentic” and “LLM API” actually mean at the depth this role expects. Since the application form parses your CV directly, check it against our ATS resume format for fresher software engineers first.
Other Current Openings Worth Comparing
- Celonis Associate Engineer — another enterprise software product company hiring at entry level.
- CloudSEK SDE Intern, Frontend — if frontend is closer to what you actually want.
How to Apply

About Zycus
Zycus is a global provider of Source-to-Pay (S2P) procurement software used by Fortune 1000 organisations to manage sourcing, contract management, procurement, invoicing and supplier management. Its platform is built around Merlin AI, which the company describes as an agentic AI engine powering autonomous workflows across the procurement lifecycle. Zycus has been recognised by analyst firms including Gartner, Forrester and IDC, and operates across North America, EMEA and APAC.
For a fresher, the relevant detail is that procurement software is a deep enterprise domain: the systems are large, the customers are demanding, and the AI work is applied to real business workflows rather than demos. The company frames its platform as one where “AI is not a feature. It is the foundation”, and this role is written to match that.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1. Can 2026 or 2028 batch students apply?
No. The posting specifies BE/B.Tech graduates graduating in 2027.
Q2. I had one backlog in an early semester but cleared it. Am I eligible?
On the wording, no. The criterion is “no active backlogs and no history of backlogs/arrears”, which covers cleared ones. This is verifiable from your transcripts.
Q3. Is the 80% requirement only for the degree?
No. It applies to 10th, 12th and BE/B.Tech: all three.
Q4. What does “(PICT)” in the job title mean?
The posting does not explain it. Zycus lists another role tagged “(TCET)”, a Mumbai engineering college, which suggests the bracket marks a campus-specific requisition: PICT most likely being Pune Institute of Computer Technology. Nothing in the stated eligibility restricts applicants by college, so if you are not from PICT, confirm before assuming either way.
Q5. Do I really need to use AI coding tools?
The posting lists demonstrated interest in AI-assisted development under eligibility, and names ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Gemini. Evidence through projects, hackathons, competitions or open-source work is what “demonstrated” means here.
Q6. Which of the three cities will I work in?
The posting lists Mumbai, Bengaluru and Pune as hybrid locations without saying how allocation works. Confirm with the recruiter.
Q7. What is the salary?
Not disclosed in the posting.
Q8. Is this a machine learning role?
No. It is Java and Spring Boot backend engineering that builds APIs and services interacting with AI systems. Model building is not part of the described work.
