IIT (ISM) Dhanbad is hosting DevDash ’26: a beginner-friendly, offline web development hackathon where teams receive a mystery challenge prompt at the start of the event and have limited time to build a functional, presentable website from scratch.

No pre-event prep on the challenge itself. You find out the prompt on the day. The goal is to interpret it, build something that works, and explain your decisions to the judges. That last part matters as much as the code.

Registration closes 7 October 2026. The event itself is fully offline at the IIT ISM Dhanbad campus.

What Is DevDash ’26?

DevDash is a mystery-prompt web hackathon. You don’t know the challenge beforehand: teams receive the prompt at the start of the event and build from there within a fixed time window.

The format keeps things equal: everyone starts from zero at the same time, on the same problem. The differentiation comes from how well your team interprets the brief, how cleanly you execute under pressure, and how clearly you explain your approach during judging.

It’s explicitly beginner-friendly: the emphasis is on creativity and problem interpretation, not on how sophisticated your tech stack is.

Event Format

  • Teams check in at IIT ISM Dhanbad campus
  • Mystery challenge prompt is revealed at the start of the event
  • Teams build a functional website within the allotted time
  • Completed project is submitted before the deadline
  • Each team presents their project in a 3–5 minute demo
  • Judges ask questions about implementation and approach

What You Need to Submit

  • A completed, runnable website
  • A 3–5 minute presentation or demo
  • A brief explanation of your development approach and decisions

Rules to Know

  • All development must happen during the event, no pre-built projects
  • Each team must submit their own work within the announced deadline
  • Teams must be able to explain their project in depth during judging. If you used AI assistance, you still need to understand what was built and why
  • AI tools are allowed during development
  • Misrepresentation of work or unfair practices leads to disqualification
  • Judges’ decisions are final

Who Should Participate?

  • Students at any level who want hands-on experience building under a time constraint with an unknown brief. This is exactly the kind of pressure that separates candidates who “know web dev” from those who can actually ship something. If you’re still building your web dev foundation, our Frontend Developer Roadmap covers the core skills worth having before you walk in
  • Beginners who haven’t done a hackathon before: DevDash is explicitly beginner-friendly, and the offline format at a campus venue keeps it lower-stakes than large open competitions
  • Teams with mixed skills (a developer and a designer, or a frontend person and someone who can present well) often do better here than four developers writing code in parallel
  • Students near Dhanbad or willing to travel to IIT ISM for the event

Who Is This Not For?

  • Candidates who cannot attend in person at IIT ISM Dhanbad: the event is entirely offline with no remote participation option
  • Solo participants: minimum team size is 2
  • Those looking for a domain-specific or AI/ML hackathon. This is purely web development

Tips for DevDash

Interpret Before You Build

The mystery prompt is intentionally open-ended. Teams that spend 10 minutes aligning on what they’re building, and why, before writing a single line of code consistently outperform teams that start coding immediately and course-correct halfway through.

Ship Something That Works

A simple, functional website beats an ambitious broken one every time. Scope aggressively: identify the one core thing your site needs to do, make that work cleanly, then add to it if time allows.

Prepare Your Presenter

Judging includes a Q&A on your implementation and approach. Decide upfront who presents and who answers technical questions. A team that can articulate their decisions clearly (why they chose a specific approach, what they’d improve) scores significantly higher than one that just demos the output.

AI Tools Are Allowed — Use Them Right

The rules permit AI assistance but require that you understand what you’ve built. Using AI to generate boilerplate or debug faster is smart. Pasting AI output you can’t explain will get you in trouble during the Q&A. Our Git and GitHub Roadmap is worth a skim before the event: clean version control during a timed build saves teams from losing work at the worst moment.

Practice a 3-Minute Demo Before the Day

Run through your presentation format with your team beforehand: intro, what the site does, one interesting technical decision, and what you’d build next. Teams that have never rehearsed a demo together tend to ramble or repeat themselves under pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. Do I need prior hackathon experience to participate?
No. DevDash is explicitly beginner-friendly. If you can build a basic functional website, you’re eligible and equipped to participate.

Q2. What tech stack should I use?
No stack is specified or required. Use whatever your team is most comfortable and fastest with: the judging criteria favour a working, well-explained website over a technically impressive but incomplete one.

Q3. Can I use AI tools like GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT during the hackathon?
Yes. AI assistance is explicitly permitted. The rule is that you must understand and be able to explain everything you submit: AI-generated code you can’t explain will cost you during the Q&A.

Q4. Is the event online or offline?
Fully offline at IIT ISM Dhanbad campus. There is no remote participation option.

Q5. Can I participate alone?
No. Minimum team size is 2. Maximum is 4.

Q6. What exactly is the mystery prompt?
Unknown until the event starts: that’s the point. Teams receive the challenge prompt at the beginning of the hackathon and build from there. There is no way to prepare for the specific prompt in advance.

Q7. Is there a registration fee?
Not mentioned in the listing. Check the current Unstop page for fee details before registering, as this may be updated.
