IIT BHU JRA Recruitment 2026

IIT (BHU), Varanasi has invited applications for one Junior Research Assistant (JRA) position under a CSTUP-sponsored research project titled “Development of an AI-Enabled Platform for Remote Condition Monitoring of Overhead Power Transmission Line Insulators.” The project sits in the Department of Electrical Engineering and focuses on building AI-enabled sensing and monitoring systems to remotely assess the condition of power transmission line insulators.

One eligibility condition matters more than any other here: only Indian citizens who are residents of Uttar Pradesh are eligible, per the funding norms of the Council of Science & Technology, U.P. (CSTUP). This isn’t a general “preference” — it’s a hard eligibility gate tied to how the project is funded, so candidates from outside UP should not apply regardless of how well they match the technical requirements.

Important Dates

Application Status: Open

  • Deadline for Submission: 21 September 2026, 23:59:59 IST

Age is calculated as on this same closing date, with relaxation applicable per Government of India regulations and the funding agency’s norms.

Eligibility Criteria

Essential Educational Qualification

B.E. / B.Tech in Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, or allied branches, with a minimum of 60% marks (or equivalent grade).

If your degree is graded on a CGPA scale, convert it using the formula your own university prescribes rather than a generic multiplier — our CGPA to percentage conversion guide covers the university-wise formulas, and with a hard 60% cut-off the difference between formulas can decide whether you clear the bar.

Citizenship and Residency

Only Indian citizens who are residents of Uttar Pradesh are eligible, as per CSTUP funding norms. This applies regardless of where you completed your degree — the residency requirement is about the candidate, not the institution.

Desirable Qualifications

A valid GATE score in EE, EC, CS, or AI (Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning), or any other national-level eligibility examination in a relevant discipline.

Age Limit

Maximum 28 years as on the last date of application, with age relaxation applicable in accordance with Government of India regulations and the funding agency’s norms.

Preferred Skill Sets

  • Hands-on experience in AI/ML model development.
  • Signal and image processing.
  • Python programming.
  • Sensor design.
  • Embedded systems.
  • High-voltage systems.

If your AI/ML fundamentals need strengthening before you apply, our Skills Required for AI/ML Jobs for Freshers guide covers the core areas — Python, model evaluation, and practical project-building — that this kind of research role draws on.

Who Should Apply?

  • UP-resident Indian citizens with a BE/BTech in EE, ECE, Instrumentation, CSE, or an allied branch, meeting the 60% marks threshold.
  • Candidates genuinely interested in applied AI/ML work tied to real hardware and field data, rather than purely theoretical or software-only ML work.
  • Those with some exposure to high-voltage systems or sensor/embedded hardware alongside AI/ML skills — the role explicitly blends both domains.
  • Candidates comfortable with a temporary, project-linked position rather than a permanent appointment.

Who Is This Role Not For?

  • Candidates who are not residents of Uttar Pradesh — this is a hard eligibility requirement, not a preference.
  • Candidates above 28 years of age as on the closing date, without an applicable relaxation.
  • Those looking for a permanent research or teaching position — this JRA role is purely temporary and co-terminus with the project, meaning it ends when the project ends.

Nature of Duties

  • Performing data acquisition in a laboratory environment, including high-voltage systems and test setups.
  • Designing and implementing AI/ML models for fault/condition detection using field-acquired data.
  • Assisting with data acquisition, system integration, field trials, and administrative matters related to the project.

Emoluments

The position carries a fixed monthly stipend/fellowship/salary of ₹28,000. The role is initially for one year and may be extended up to two additional years based on performance, for a maximum total duration of three years. The position is purely temporary and co-terminus with the project — it does not extend beyond the project’s own funded lifespan, and selected candidates are expected to join immediately.

Selection Process

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted by email regarding the interview date — no other form of communication regarding shortlisting will be entertained. The Principal Investigator has discretion to limit the number of candidates called for interview to a reasonable number, based on qualifications and experience higher than the minimum prescribed. No TA/DA will be paid for attending the interview. Applicants must bring all original documents to the interview if shortlisted, based on the information submitted in their application.

Similar Institute and Research Positions

Project-linked research roles at institutes and government labs follow much the same pattern — fixed stipend, fixed term, interview-based selection:

TISS Junior Engineer (Electrical) — the same core discipline, in an institute setting.

ADA Project Assistant recruitment — Aeronautical Development Agency, project-based technical work.

ISRO NRSC recruitment — scientist and engineer grade posts at the National Remote Sensing Centre.
