Ask a final-year engineering student how to get into a PSU and the answer is usually one word: GATE. That is only half the story. GATE is an exam conducted by the IITs and IISc mainly for postgraduate admissions, and it does not recruit anyone. What happens is that some PSUs choose to shortlist candidates using GATE scores, and each PSU decides on its own, cycle by cycle, whether to do that at all.
This guide explains how that link works in practice: what GATE 2027 looks like, which organisations GATE’s own website names as users of its score, what the GATE 2026 cycle actually produced, and one case that surprises many candidates. ONGC, probably the most talked-about GATE recruiter, has recently hired through its own computer-based test instead. Every fact below comes from official GATE pages or official PSU notices. Where we could not verify something, we say so, because coaching websites quote cutoffs, salaries and “confirmed” PSU lists that often contradict each other.

If you registered and spotted a mistake in your application, the rectification window stays open until 31 October 2026. If you missed this cycle, watch the official GATE website for the next one. All dates are marked “liable to change” by the organisers, so check the site before you plan around any of them.
Exam pattern in short
Every paper has 65 questions: 10 in General Aptitude and 55 in the subject, carrying 100 marks in total. Questions are multiple choice (MCQ), multiple select (MSQ) or numerical answer type (NAT), worth one or two marks each. A wrong MCQ answer costs one-third of the question’s marks for a one-mark question and two-thirds for a two-mark question. MSQ and NAT carry no negative marking, and MSQ has no partial marking.
What GATE Does and Does Not Do for a PSU Job
GATE gives you a score and a scorecard. It does not give you an interview call or a vacancy. A PSU that wants to use GATE publishes its own notification, naming the post, the GATE papers it will accept, the eligibility rules and the dates. You then apply on that PSU’s own website; there is no central portal. The GATE website says it plainly: GATE qualification does not assure a PSU job.
Which PSUs Use GATE
The Opportunities page of the GATE 2027 website carries a list of organisations that have used GATE scores in recruitment, and it calls the list “not exhaustive”. It names: Airports Authority of India, BHEL, BSNL, Coal India, CRIS, Chenab Valley Power Projects, Damodar Valley Corporation, ECIL, Engineers India Limited (EIL), GAIL, HAL, IOCL, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, NALCO, NHAI, NLC India, NMDC, NPCIL, NTPC, Odisha Power Generation Corporation, ONGC, Power Grid, Grid Controller of India (GRID-INDIA), Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited and SAIL.
That list shows who has used GATE in the past. It does not mean all 25 are hiring through GATE this year, and it carries no post names, dates or notice links. For a more current picture, look at the notifications page of the GATE 2026 website, where organisations record their announcements.
What the GATE 2026 cycle recorded
| Organisation | Announced | GATE papers |
|---|---|---|
| NPCIL | 29 September 2025 | CE, CH, EC, EE, IN, ME |
| Engineers India Limited (EIL) | 12 March 2026 | CH, ME, CE, EE |
| GAIL | 9 March 2026 | CH, EE, ME, IN |
| NHAI | 7 April 2026 | CE |
| National Informatics Centre (NIC) | 10 April 2026 | CS, EC, DA |
| Odisha Power Transmission Corporation (OPTCL) | 12 May 2026 | EE |
| NHIDCL | 22 May 2026 | CE |
A few things stand out. Announcements were spread over eight months, and NPCIL’s came in September 2025, months before the exam, so waiting for results day to start watching is a mistake. Most entries are for core branches: mechanical, electrical, civil, electronics, chemical and instrumentation. Computer science appears only against NIC in this record. And not every name here is a PSU in the strict sense: NHAI is a statutory authority and NIC is a government body, though both recruit using GATE scores. This table shows only what each organisation told GATE. The post, vacancies, age limit and dates are in the organisation’s own notice.
Not Every PSU Uses GATE Every Year: the ONGC Example
ONGC is on the official GATE list, and many candidates assume it hires engineers through GATE every year. ONGC’s own recruitment notices tell a different story. In February 2024 it advertised Graduate Trainees “through GATE-2023 Score” (Advt. No. 1/2024). Its January 2025 notice for engineering and geoscience posts at E1 level was through a computer-based test (Advt. No. 1/2025). And its July 2026 notice for geologists and engineers at E1 level (Advt. No. 2/2026) was also a computer-based test. We found no GATE-based graduate trainee notice from ONGC for 2025 or 2026.
| Advt. 1/2024 (GATE route) | Advt. 2/2026 (CBT route) | |
|---|---|---|
| Basis of selection | GATE 2023 score | Computer-based test |
| Weightage | GATE score 60, qualification 25, interview 15 | CBT 85, interview 15 |
| Vacancies | 25 | 52 |
| Minimum marks in degree | 60% | 60% |
| Pay scale | E1: ₹60,000 to ₹1,80,000 | E1: ₹60,000 to ₹1,80,000 |
| Application fee | ₹1,000 (General/OBC/EWS); none for SC/ST/PwBD | ₹1,000 (General/OBC/EWS); none for SC/ST/PwBD |
In the 2026 notice, the test had 85 multiple choice questions (domain 40, general awareness 10, aptitude 25, English 10) in two hours, with no negative marking. The 2026 age limit for engineering posts was 26 years for unreserved candidates, 29 for OBC (NCL) and 31 for SC/ST, counted on the last date of application.
Two lessons follow. First, the 2024 notice used a GATE 2023 score, so a score from an earlier cycle can still count while it is within its three-year validity. Second, a good GATE score alone is not a complete plan. Prepare for both: a strong GATE score, and the ability to sit a PSU’s own test, which usually adds general awareness, aptitude and English to your domain subject. This is one PSU’s pattern and others may differ, or may return to GATE in a later cycle.
How Selection Usually Works
Every PSU sets its own procedure, but the common skeleton looks like this. You apply online on the PSU’s website. The PSU shortlists candidates from the GATE score, paper-wise and category-wise, usually a few candidates per vacancy (in ONGC’s 2024 notice, five candidates per vacancy went to the interview). Shortlisted candidates face an interview, and some PSUs add a group discussion or a written test. The final merit list combines the GATE score with other components, such as the 60/25/15 split in the ONGC example above. Document verification and a medical examination come after that.
You will see “expected GATE cutoffs” for every PSU on coaching websites. They vary a lot from one site to another, and none of them is an official figure, so we are not repeating any of them. The number that matters is the cutoff the PSU itself uses for shortlisting in a given cycle.
What to Check in Every Notification
- GATE paper and score year: which paper codes are accepted for which post, and which year’s score the PSU will count
- Minimum marks in your degree: ONGC asked for 60% in both examples above, and other PSUs set their own figure. If your university gives a CGPA, see how it converts in our CGPA to percentage guide
- Age limit and its reference date: the limit differs by category and by post, so read the exact wording and the date on which your age is counted. Our Government Exam Age Calculator works out your exact age against a cutoff date
- Degree completion date: final-year students can sit GATE, but a PSU post usually needs the degree to be complete by a date given in the notice
- Selection weightage: how much the GATE score, the interview and any other stage count for
- Fee, stipend and any service bond: some notices state these and some do not, so do not assume
- Category certificates: OBC (NCL) and EWS certificates have format and date rules, so keep valid ones ready before applications open
What to Do Now
If you are appearing in GATE 2027, pick your paper to match your branch and the posts you want. The notices above show that mechanical, electrical, civil, electronics, chemical and instrumentation papers appear most often. Keep your degree percentage safe, because a strong score does not help if you fall below a PSU’s minimum marks. Bookmark the notifications page on the GATE website and the careers pages of the PSUs you are interested in, and check them every few weeks instead of waiting for results day. Keep some time for the written-test route too, since a PSU can switch between GATE and its own test from one cycle to the next.
A few practical things are worth sorting out before applications open. PSU application forms usually ask for a photo and signature at fixed dimensions and file sizes, and a rejected upload is an easy way to lose an application, so keep both ready, and our Photo Resizer can bring them to the required size. Keep a clean one-page resume for the interview stage (our ATS-friendly resume guide shows a layout that works for non-software roles) and practise the common questions in our HR interview guide. And if you are still weighing a PSU against other paths, our government job vs private job comparison sets out the trade-offs.
Be careful with anyone who promises a PSU seat for a fee. PSUs recruit only through their own portals and notices, and GATE itself says a qualification does not assure a job. If you are not an engineer or are not planning to sit GATE, PSUs and government bodies also take graduate and diploma apprentices, and the national apprenticeship portals are the place to start: see our guides to NATS 2.0 registration and NAPS 2.0 registration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is GATE compulsory for a PSU job?
No. Some PSUs use GATE scores, some run their own computer-based tests, and some use both across different years or posts. ONGC’s recent notices are a good example of a PSU moving from GATE to its own test.
How long is a GATE score valid?
The GATE 2027 information brochure says the score remains valid for three years from the date the result is announced. A PSU notice may still name a particular GATE year, so read it carefully.
Is there an age limit to appear in GATE?
No. The GATE 2027 website states that there is no age limit and no limit on the number of attempts. A PSU recruitment notice, however, can set its own age limit, which is a separate rule.
Can final-year students apply for GATE?
Yes. Students in the third year or higher of an eligible degree can appear. For a PSU post, check the notice for the date by which your degree must be complete.
Do PSUs hire computer science students through GATE?
Sometimes. In the GATE 2026 record, the National Informatics Centre announced that it would use CS, EC and DA papers. Most other entries were for core engineering papers, so the number of CS openings through GATE has been smaller.
