NIC Scientific/Technical Assistant-A Recruitment 2026

Applications closed on 01 Sep 2026. This page is kept as a reference for the eligibility rules, salary and selection process, which usually carry over to the next cycle.

For roles you can still apply to, see the latest job openings.

The National Informatics Centre (NIC), under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, has released a detailed advertisement for 376 vacancies of Scientific/Technical Assistant-A across three disciplines — Computer Sciences & Information Technology, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. This is a Group-B, Gazetted-non post at Level 6 of the 7th CPC, and unlike most technical recruitments, there’s no separate written exam — selection is based entirely on your valid GATE score.

That last point is worth sitting with: if you already have a GATE 2024, 2025, or 2026 score in the relevant paper, you don’t need to prepare for another exam to apply here. If you don’t have a GATE score yet, this notification effectively isn’t accessible to you for this cycle, since there’s no alternative test route.

Eligibility Criteria

Electronics and Communication EngineeringEC
Data Science and Artificial IntelligenceDA

A valid GATE score from 2024, 2025, or 2026 in the corresponding paper code is mandatory. Equal weightage is given to all three GATE years, so a 2024 score is treated the same as a 2026 score for merit purposes.

Essential Educational Qualification

  • Computer Sciences & IT: A pass in M.Sc./MS/MCA/B.E./B.Tech. in Electronics, Electronics and Communication, Electronics & Telecommunication, Computer Sciences, Computer and Networking Security, Software Systems, Information Technology, or Informatics (single or in combination), corresponding to GATE Paper Code CS.
  • Electronics and Communication Engineering: Qualification corresponding to GATE Paper Code EC (as detailed in the official notification).
  • Data Science and Artificial Intelligence: Qualification corresponding to GATE Paper Code DA (as detailed in the official notification).

The qualification must be completed on or before the closing date, and no claim of an “equivalent” qualification to what’s listed will be entertained.

  • Candidates above the age limit for their category as on 30 September 2026, without an applicable relaxation.

Place of Posting

Application Fee

CategoryFee
UR / OBC (NCL) / EWS₹800 per discipline
SC / ST / PwBD / Women (any category)Nil

Candidates applying to more than one discipline must pay ₹800 separately for each discipline, where applicable. Fees are accepted online only (credit/debit card, UPI, or net banking) — demand drafts, cheques, cash, or postal orders are not accepted. The fee is non-refundable, including in cases of incomplete transactions.

Selection Process

Selection is based entirely on GATE score merit, followed by document verification — there is no separate written test or interview conducted by NIC for this post.

  • A category-wise merit list is prepared for each discipline based on GATE score.
  • Candidates must submit their best GATE score from any one eligible year (2024, 2025, or 2026) in the discipline applied for.
  • Equal weightage is given to GATE 2024, 2025, and 2026 scores.

Tie-Breaking Rules

  1. The candidate with the older GATE year is ranked higher.
  2. If the GATE score and year are the same, the older candidate (by age) is ranked higher.
  3. If still tied, the candidate with the higher percentage in their essential qualification is ranked higher.

Shortlisted candidates are called for document verification before a provisional appointment is offered. Meeting the eligibility criteria does not automatically guarantee appointment — this is confirmed only after successful document verification.

Documents Required

Candidates should keep the following ready before applying and for eventual document verification:

  • Date of Birth proof (Municipal birth certificate or Matriculation certificate)
  • Matriculation and Senior Secondary certificates/mark sheets
  • Valid GATE Score Card (2024/2025/2026)
  • Essential Qualification certificate and mark sheets
  • CGPA conversion certificate from the University Registrar, if applicable
  • Category certificate (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS), if applicable
  • PwBD certificate (minimum 40% permanent disability), if applicable
  • Experience certificate, if any (though experience is not required for this post)
  • No Objection Certificate (NOC), if currently employed with Government/PSU/Autonomous body
  • Age relaxation certificate, if applicable
  • Aadhaar card, for Aadhaar-based authentication used throughout the recruitment process

Prescribed formats for caste, OBC-NCL, EWS, and disability certificates are provided as annexures in the official detailed advertisement.
